I tried to start a new Tribe but Tribe kept giving me the Error message. So I went to LJ & started: Vagabond Travel in America
A place to network, share and discuss the non-mundane methods and non use of Expedia type travels. Where would you recommend someone to go? What places should not be missed? Where is it safe to camp out – hostels, cottages, campground, RV, bus or in your car?

Traveling around California

I'm from San Antonio, TX. Not as dusty and alone as the outer fringes of the state, but I'd still like to get out. I'll be backpacking West, toward Yosemite State park. I'll probably be stopping off in death valley park first. I want to see the Methuselah trees; they're supposed to be thousands of years old, just what I heard. Either way, I'm the type who's far better suited for desert climates. Hot, dry, thirsty, wander, jump, yawn, yell, it's all good. After Cali I'm going to head north to Grants Pass, OR. From there I don't know. I may need a place to stay in NV around Burning Man, if any body's interested, but that's not going to be for a while.
I dunno what else to say. I'm not an axe-murderer or a rapist. I do drink and smoke, but I'm otherwise pretty nice (or so I've been told by people that like me). What do i do? I dunno, I consider myself a writer regardless of the fact that I've never been paid for it. I have a warm, poetic handle of prose that I put to paper when the feeling strikes. Things have just grown stale down here. Maybe I'll find some inspiration out there in Americaland. I have this outdated and fairly naive concept of the American hitchhiker, probably from reading too much Kerouac. I accept the possibility of my death in the same manner that I accept the possibility of later eating sunflower seeds, or perhaps the possibility that I'll step on an ant. I'm no fool though. I can handle myself well enough to know better...
But I digress, I suppose. If anyone out there is interested in traveling around, let me know, we'll talk.

Warning for females who use craig's List (Austin, TX)

I moved out (Sat afternoon) of a share with a guy who lives on Sunridge Drive Austin, TX 78741 (gated apt complex - Wickersham / Oltoff) – will not publish his name but this is enough information to know who he is when / if he emails you.

What happened to me:

He goes through the Housing Wanted and invites females to stay with him for free and or whatever "you" donate... than he tries to get you have sex with him. The first two nights he didn't try anything than he started calling me his girlfriend and "my wife". He would also try to get me to "watch tv" with him in his bed or would say "it is much too cold to spend it alone, you should sleep with me to keep me warm.

Than one morning he threw his arms around me in a bear hug and wouldn't let me go., When I finally pushed him away and told him never do that again he pointed to his dick and said "see what you do to me"? Several times he text messaged me and called me wanting to know where I was.

The last draw was when he called me up yesterday and demanded I leave my job and go back to his apt because he wanted me to drive him around the city and he would pay me. (his car was supposedly broken). We got into a heated argument over me being available whenever he demanded it which included a lot of insulting names to me. As soon as I was off work I moved out.

I'm posting what happened to me at the Couch Surfer groups to prevent this future rapist from doing this again. I don't want what did happen to me and what could have happened to me --- happen to anther women.

Austin: Need temp crash space

I am seriously considering moving to Austin and am already here in Austin. I'm considering moving because I have chronic asthma and Los Angeles is a horrible place for asthmatics.I'm currently working virtual with a Los Angeles company so I do have a steady income so I can offer a small fee for letting me crash. I do like to cook but am clean and hate a household that leaves trash everywhere. 420 doesn't bother me in regards to ethics but I'm allergic to smoke so I can't live with heavy smoking (of any kind).

I have no pets, I don't do drugs, I rarely drink and I work a lot (away from where I sleep). I wear mostly jeans and t shirts but will probably get dressed up to go out a couple of times to see night Austin life. Other than that I read a lot, I like to hang out at local cafes and parks and just relax and I don't watch tv.

Not sure how long I will be staying since I just found out a possible new development at my job. I'm simply just angry. I wrote a killer proposal that would make money for the company while traveling and without even looking at it I'm told by my boss he didn't even look at it before saying no...Though he hasn't said it to me. Fing bullshit! The few people who have seen it were highly impressed with my research and stats....

I talked to my boss and told him that I was still going and since I have never asked for a raise and have never taken a vacation since I've started I would request a 3 month absence - he didn't give me the vibe that would be accepted either. So if I have to make a choice between this job and traveling I'm choosing to travel! I'm keeping my original plan by taking why 10 from west to east and staying in FL for a while about a month than who knows.... just needed to get that off my chest.

I'm in a bad spot. I'm very soon moving all my possessions into a storage space, and moving out of my home. unfortunately, I have yet to arrange a new place to live; as I was more concerned with making sure my possesions are safe, and my cats will be taken care of.

But now, I need to figure out how to take care of myself over the next month.

If anyone (prefeably someone I know... but I'm not that picky right now) can help me out in the short term, I'll do what I can to reciprocate (dishes, laundry, dogwalking... you name it)

I realize this is a stretch, but, I have a limited set of options.

GOSSAU, Switzerland (Reuters) - Squeezing 150 people into Vince Peiro's flat in the foothills of the Swiss Alps would be a very tight fit -- hence the tent city sprouting outside in the July evening sunshine.

Peiro was hosting a party for members of www.couchsurfing.com, an increasingly popular Web site that matches up travelers with locals offering a spare bed or couch for the night -- for free.

Couchsurfing, which people can use to find somewhere to stay or just a local guide to a city, has more than 300,000 members worldwide, with up to 10,000 more signing up each week.

"I traveled for nearly a year in 1998 and I was often surprised by the hospitality I received all over the world and especially in the Middle East," said Peiro, in his early 30s.

"Complete strangers invited me to their home, let me rest, fed and watered me and sent me on. One way to give that back is certainly by hosting couchsurfers."

Peiro would normally put people up in his living room, in an old farmhouse in rolling fields overlooking the first ridges of the northern Alps. But for the party, numbers dictated that most visitors had to bring their own tents and hope it stayed dry.

Most guests, largely in their 20s, came from Switzerland or neighboring countries, but some came from as far afield as Australia and Pakistan to stay with him in the small town of Gossau.

For the party Peiro simply posted a note well in advance on the Couchsurfing Web site with details of when, where and what to bring and people arrived to taste his paella, in what has become an annual Couchsurfing social event.

Other Web sites like www.hospitalityclub.org and www.place2stay.net offer a similar service to Couchsurfing and online social network Facebook has recently introduced its own "couch swap" function.

For years companies have arranged house swaps, where people exchange homes for a cut-price holiday, but on a far more formal and rigid basis.

TRAVELLING IN YOUR OWN HOME

Couchsurfing.com was founded in 2004 by American Casey Fenton, who came up with the idea when wondering what to do and where to stay on a last-minute weekend in Iceland.

He used the University of Iceland's student directory and emailed 1,500 students asking for a place to stay, receiving about 100 offers. After meeting plenty of locals, he wondered why every journey was not like this.

The site's instructions are fairly simple -- sign up, create a profile, plan a trip and send an email to potential hosts, or offer to host some surfers yourself.

It is completely free but accepts donations from grateful travelers which the site's owners say cover costs.

Pervaiz Nadir, one of Peiro's guests from Pakistan, said visitors who stayed at his home in Islamabad "don't know of these places (to visit) but I know them very well. If you meet me you will learn about the culture.

"There is no substitute for meeting the person," he said.

While most people turn out to be genuine and generous, there have been abuses, such as a visitor in the United States who wrote dud checks and stole credit cards.

Couchsurfing has safety features, based on each member leaving references about experiences with other surfers -- bad as well as good -- and a system to verify names and addresses.

Privacy settings also allow members to restrict how much information about them is available online.

The Web site sent a warning email last year asking any members who had been victims of a crime to leave a factual, negative reference on the relevant profile to alert other users.

The site suggests various ways to help your host including household chores or making dinner. But many members say hosting is half the fun.

"Having people stay with you in a weird way is like visiting the place (they are from)," said Dule Misevic from Serbia, who lives in Zurich. "It's kind of like traveling in your own home."

Hi!

I'm an ecology student living in Israel and have been
in New York now for three day's. I've been couch
surfing with Kristina Walton of Brooklyn since the
13th. I plan to be in New York for three weeks to
apply for Israeli Citizenship for which I can only do
from my home state. I was born on the upper west side
of Manhattan, grew up on the lower east side and flew
the coop to California where I started an Organic
community farm and Straw Bale Construction Collective.
I'm Eco-Groovy, I recycle, I love animals and kids and
I would love to met folks who are respectful to our
planet and love planning community events. If by
chance, you can host me for a few days, I could make
you an excellent raw food pie made from nuts and
fruit...?

a place to stay in san-fran needed desperately for today - friday 14th

hello,
we are four people trying to find a place to stay in san fran on friday 14th, for one night only.
the reason for the short notice is that there was a misunderstading between us and the guy we were sppose to stay with. he thought we arrive today and he is not sure he will be avalible tomorrow.
we have sleeping bags and we dont need much. just a place to sleep.
a little about ourselves: we are four from israel. me (michael) my girlfriend (gal) her sister (maayan) and her husband (ori) is the whole group. gal and i are going on saturday to earthdance and maayan and ori have a flight on saturday to new-york. we always respect the houses we are staying in.
so.... if anyone can please please help us, we would be so thankful.

they need a place to stay in LA between the 6th and 13th of september (or a fraction of this time). they are now in san fran, staying in hotels and their money is running out, so if anyone is avalible, it would be great, wonderful and amazing. all of this products in one couch. and...... you get a gratitude for free!

In a few weeks I'll be starting a 3 to 4 year-long walk to 49 of the 50 US states. Ill be carrying everything with me (tent, sleeping bag, toiletries, clothing, etc.) and walking on two-lane/back roads. My website has more details and specifics: www.becomethepath.com

Ok so I am moving to key west from upstate new york and I am wondering how much it will cost to have my wonderful and luxurious queen size elegante mattress shipped to key west. it's about the only thing I have that I cant take with on the plane...should i just try and sell it here (its only 6 months old and hasnt seen much action. well maybe a little action...) and buy a new bed once i get down there? is it going to cost me like 1000 ucks to have it shipped? does anyone have any experience with this???

If you know of anyone getting rid of carpet we would be very grateful of it.

The only catch is we need it today! or as soon as possible, yesterday really. We are trying to pack the serpent mother for the fire arts festival in Oakland and then on to Amsterdam, taking Flaming Lotus Fire Art to the world ( http://serpentmother.com/ ), and it would be part of the solution to a problem. We are working day and night. It isn't easy fitting a 168 ft long Flaming Serpent into a shipping container. She takes a bit of taming!

If you know of friends or family getting rid of carpet which could be donated to the cause, please email as soon as you read this. Packing deadlines are being pushed!

Southern Italy in early July

Hello! For the first week in July, I will be in southern Italy. I'm going to spend a few days on Isola Stromboli. After that I plan to take the ferry to Reggio di Calabria and head up the coast to Naples. My question is: what is a must see between Reggio and Napoli? My budget is limited, so these should be very low cost activities. Free is even better!

I'm also looking for friendly couches to surf, of course. I'm signed up with couchsurfing.com and hospitalityclub.org, but have only found a few potential couches along my proposed route. Anyone know some friendly host types?

Gaelle and I have Elena and Dennis from Estonia staying with us this week... they arrived jet lagged yesterday on the coldest day in Melbourne in 50 years and went straight to bed...

We warmed them up later in the evening by taking them out to a local Indian restaurant and sampling some spicy food and local red wine...
